Have You Heard Of Kopi Luwak Or Civet Coffee ? Do U Dare To Try?
Kopi Luwak or Civet coffee is coffee made from coffee berries which have been eaten by and passed through the digestive tract of the Asian Palm Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus). The animals gorge on the ripe berries, and excrete the partially-digested beans, which are then harvested for sale. This process takes place on the islands of Sumatra, Java and Sulawesi in the Indonesian Archipelago, in the Philippines (where the product is called Kape Alamid), and the coffee estates of south India. Vietnam has a similar type of coffee, called weasel coffee which also comes from the droppings of weasels after they eat the coffee berries. In actuality the “weasel” is just the local version of the Asian Palm Civet.
It is suppose to be the rarest gourmet coffee and very expensive too!

If I’m not wrong, it’s about $300 per lb. It’s very expensive. But I’d try it. It’s from my home town actually in Sumatra.

Kopi Luwak is unique. People pay high prices for the rarity and interesting story behind its creation. Yes, the civet will dine only on the ripest coffee cherries, but one commonly overlooked fact is that the tree of choice for this creature is the robusta species of coffee. Robusta is, as the name suggests, more robust as a crop, resistant to diseases, and easier to grow than its more highly prized cousin, the arabica species. Robusta beans also have more caffeine and less flavor than arabica beans.
I’ve had the opportunity to taste Kopi Luwak coffee – after all, it’s about the unique experience! It was fun, but in terms of flavor, there are significantly better choices.
For the price, you would be much better off with Panama’s Hacienda La Esmeralda, which deserves its reputation as the world’s best and most expensive coffee. It was chosen based upon taste. I was fortunate enough to be able to sample a cup of this – an absolutely amazing coffee.

I’ve had “monkey coffee” in India, “processed” in the same way.
I’ll try anything once – but this coffee was a huge disappointment,
and all hype.
